"I started dabbling in Brazilian jiujitsu many years ago but was never able to stay at more than one school very long as I've been rather nomadic and was often in places that didn't have anything close. I'm the ever-eager white belt. Any time I was somewhere near a school for a short while I would train. What I found with the few schools I trained at is that they usually start with the coach giving an advanced technique no matter what your level is, practising it a few times with a partner and then spending the next hour and a half rolling full on with no one really coaching much through that. Obviously you learn from rolling and it’s good to roll with more experienced people but not without the basics. I tapped fast and tapped often, which is common for all beginners, but other than that I had learned nothing.

I’ve also found that often the more advanced guys seem to have a chip on their shoulder and they are often trying to rip your arm or leg or head off or hold the choke way after you tap. Typical macho syndrome. This is where Crazy Monkey Centurion with Jacques and Renate was different. Small, short intensive classes. No one is trying to rip you limb from limb and you actually get coached. I learned more in my short time with them than with the others combined.

Being taught at your own level and pace with drills, flow rolling and using technique instead of brute force was refreshing. And at my level they were more focused on correct posture, leverage and escapes rather than a ton of complicated submissions, so when I was rolling with more experienced guys I could move correctly and get sweeps and escapes correct.  Everybody in the class was always friendly and eager to help a newbie. The motto of leaving your ego at the door and no meatheads really does shine through with Crazy Monkey Centurion. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think people should walk on eggshells around beginners. I just think the art falls flat without the basics and good coaching. If I were still in Centurion I would never stop training and I highly recommend Jacques and Renate to anyone of any level, whatever your goals in jits are.  On top of that, the lineage speaks for itself. Rigan Machado - Rodney King - Jacques and Renate Wagner."
